BSAG - "More time to save the world"

About Mathias

I am a middle-aged man with a mission: I want to be part of the acutely needed shift from the linear consuming economy to a circular and sustainable economy. At the moment, I do this by running and developing BSAG’s work together with my colleagues.

I want us to realise that we are all part of Earth’s biosphere, and I wish to be at peace with myself.

My hobbies:

Archipelago life, sailing, skiing, singing; taking care of my apple trees

My favourite music:

Baroque classics (e.g. Bach, Händel); Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart; The Beatles, CCR, ABBA, The Real Group, Rajaton....

My favourite media:

Newspapers, books; TV, internet

My education:

I am a biologist by training: a Ph.D. and Docent in molecular biology. 25 years of experience in molecular biological research and commercial cancer diagnostics and therapy development.

"The aim of BSAG is to restore the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea. This is achieved by focusing on nutrient cycling, and especially on stopping nutrient leakage. An important aspect of our work is also to make the problems of the Baltic Sea widely public, and for this, we are involving all levels of society to provide solutions, especially the business community", says Mathias. So BSAG is not a think-tank or the like, but rather a machine or motor that initiates concrete actions with clear targets and tangible results.

It's quite natural for an organisation focusing on the environment to work in a fully digital world. It's not only more efficient, but environmentally friendly, and focused on humans and users. BSAG is using a full scale of digital services and conventional accounting services from Accountor Group. The Accountor online package of both software as a service, and personal service are used. Procountor for electronic bookkeeping and Mepco for CRM make work in all the countries around the Baltic Sea easy, and thanks to the full-scale outsourcing, BSAG can focus on its key mission: to restore the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea in a changing climate. As Mathias points out: “with smoothly running finance management processes outsourced to Accountor, we have more time to gather and manage the Baltic Sea commitments”*.

About BSAG

The Baltic Sea Action Group, BSAG (2008), is an independent foundation that works to restore the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea through uniting the resources of the public, private, and third sectors. BSAG works to solve the problems of the Baltic Sea, especially through promoting sustainable nutrient management. At the heart of BSAG is the gathering of Baltic Sea commitments, aimed at benefitting the Baltic Sea directly or indirectly. BSAG is based in Helsinki, and its activities cover the whole Baltic Sea region.

*A Commitment for the Baltic Sea

  • Is an act or a process with a positive impact - direct or indirect - on the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea
  • Is a new initiative or action for the commitment maker - completed deeds are not accepted
  • Is concrete with clearly defined milestones
  • Can be non-financial or financial
  • Can be a concrete action, providing technology, know-how, services, and improvement of processes

Engaging in the Baltic Sea opens up new markets and business opportunities for participating companies. A good commitment benefits both the Baltic Sea and the commitment maker; it provides a true win-win situation.
